EUGENE, Ore. (July 5, 2025) — Kenya’s rising star Beatrice Chebet made history today at Hayward Field, becoming the first woman ever to complete the 5,000 meters in under 14 minutes. At the Prefontaine Classic, part of the Wanda Diamond League circuit in Eugene, Chebet blazed to a world-record time of 13:58.06, demolishing the previous mark of 14:00.21 held by Ethiopia’s Gudaf Tsegay.
Chebet’s electrifying run cemented her place among the sport’s greatest. Earlier this year she already impressed the world with the second-best-ever 3,000 m (8:11.56 in Rabat) and a near world-record 5,000 m of 14:03.69 in Rome.
Beatrice Chebet - "I'm so happy; after running in Rome, I said I have to prepare for a record, because in Rome I was just running to win a race, but after running 14:03, I said that I'm capable of running a world record. So, let me go back home, and then come to Eugene. When I was coming here to Eugene, I was coming to prepare to run a world record, and I said I have to try. I said if Faith is trying, why not me? And today, I'm so happy because I've achieved being the first woman to run under 14. I'm so happy for myself."
Finishing right behind Chebet was fellow Kenyan Agnes Jebet Ngetich, capturing second place in 14:01.21 — a powerful performance just seconds from rewriting the 14-minute barrier herself.
Olympic champion and former record-holder Gudaf Tsegay settled for third in 14:04.41, unable to defend her 2023 record set at the same venue.
