Ethiopians Alemu Megertu and Asrar Abderehman shatter Sevilla marathon course records

Ethiopian's Alemu Megertu and Asrar Abderehman shattered Sevilla Marathon course records on Sunday, February 20.
Megertu broke away from the lead pack just after the 30km marker and never looked as she ran away from the rest of the field to cross the finish line in an astonishing 2:18:51. She erased the previous course record of 2:23.13 set by Juliet Chekwel from Uganda in 2020 by more than 4 minutes.
The second place in the women's marathon took Sisay Meseret Gola with 2:20:50 while Yeshi Kalayu Chekole came in third in 2:21:17
The men's marathon winner Asrar Abderehman smashed the course record with 2:04:42.
Similarly, like in the women's race, Abderehman took the lone lead after the 30km and powered home to break the Sevilla course record by three seconds. The previous record of 2:04.46 was set by Mekuant Ayenew from Ethiopia in 2020. Abderehman improved his personal best by almost 3 minutes as he entered the race with 2:07.33 PB.
Abderehman was followed by his compatriot Adeladlew Mamo who, in his marathon debut crossed the line with a very fast time of 2:05:11. Mamo's marathon debut is one of the fastest in history. The 2015 World Marathon Champion Ghirmay Ghebreslassie from Eritrea concluded the men's podium with a new personal best of 2:05.33.
