The 25-year-old Kosgei, clocked an unbelievable 2:14:04 breaking 16 year old World marathon record by 1 minute and 21 seconds.
“They (spectators) were cheering, cheering and I got more energy to keep faster,”
"I was not expecting to run like this." defending champion Kosgei said.
The previous World record of 2:15:21 from 2003 belonged to Great Britain's Paula Radcliffe who witnessed at the finish line Kosgei break her record.
“When I saw how fast Brigid was running in the first part of the race, if she was able to hold that together, she was always going to beat the time,” Radcliffe said.
Lawrence Cherono of Kenya sprinted past Ethiopian Dejene Debela to win the men’s race in 2:05:45. Debela took second in 2:05:46 while his compatriot Asefa Mengstu concluded the podium with 2:05:48. Top five men broke 2:06 barrier in Chicago.
