Course Map - Medtronic Twin Cities Marathon

The Medtronic Twin Cities Marathon is celebrated as “The Most Beautiful Urban Marathon in America”, and for good reason. The 26.2-mile (42.195 km) course delivers a seamless blend of city energy, lakeside calm, and autumn color as runners journey from downtown Minneapolis to the Minnesota State Capitol in Saint Paul.

Start – Downtown Minneapolis

The race begins near U.S. Bank Stadium, home of the Minnesota Vikings, where thousands of runners line up under the city skyline. After the opening miles through Downtown East and Cedar-Riverside, the route heads south toward the Chain of Lakes.

Miles 3 – 10: Lakes and Parkways

This scenic section circles Lake of the Isles, Lake Calhoun (Bde Maka Ska), and Lake Harriet, framed by tree-lined boulevards and cheering crowds. The flat terrain and cool October air make this stretch one of the most enjoyable and picturesque parts of the race.

Miles 11 – 16: Along the River

After passing through Minnehaha Park, runners follow the Mississippi River Parkway, crossing into Saint Paul via the Franklin Avenue Bridge. The broad views of the river and fall foliage set the tone for the second half of the marathon.

Miles 17 – 21: Summit Avenue Challenge

This is the heart of the course and the toughest test. The gradual incline up Summit Avenue leads runners past historic homes, churches, and the Cathedral of Saint Paul. The steady climb from mile 20 to mile 23 often determines how well runners pace their final push.

Miles 22 – 26.2: The Capitol Finish

The final mile offers a rewarding downhill glide toward the Minnesota State Capitol, where roaring spectators welcome finishers across the line. The wide, iconic finish straight provides a stunning backdrop for photos and a triumphant end to the journey.
