• Tokyo governor: 'Inappropriate' for London mayoral candidate to say city could step in and host Olympic Games

The governor of Tokyo has criticised as "inappropriate" the comments of a London mayoral candidate who suggested that the British capital could step in and host the Olympic Games because of the coronavirus threat in Japan.

Shaun Bailey, the Conservative candidate for mayor, said London would be ready if Tokyo was unable to host the Games, which are due to begin on July 24.

Even though much of the infrastructure from London 2012 has been dismantled or repurposed, Mr Bailey insisted that the city was able to take the torch from Tokyo if needed and urged the International Olympic Committee (IOC) to consider the city as an alternative.

"London can host the #Olympics in 2020," he said on Twitter.
