• Boston mayor seeks to dismiss coronavirus fears for marathon

Boston, Massachusetts, mayor Martin Walsh dismissed fears the famed Boston Marathon in April could be scaled back or shut down altogether because of the ongoing coronavirus outbreak.

The Boston Athletic Association, which hosts the marathon, said in a statement it was “carefully monitoring” the outbreak. And another major road running race, the Tokyo Marathon in Japan, said early this week it will only let elite athletes run in that event.

But Walsh said the US race, one of the most prominent distance events in the country, should be able to proceed as scheduled on April 20, as there is only one confirmed coronavirus case in Boston.

“I think we have to be very careful in overreacting to a situation that isn’t there,” Walsh said.
