• Intersex ex-athlete Annet Negesa 'relieved and happy' to be granted asylum in Germany

LGBTIQ+ (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender/Transsexual, Intersex and Queer/Questioning) people regularly face persecution in Uganda that is actively encouraged by political and religious leaders, with a gender non-conforming LGBTIQ+ activist there brutally murdered in his own home as recently as October.

Following the approval of her application, Negesa told the Telegraph: “I feel relieved and happy. I am thankful to the German state for granting me asylum. I have been through very difficult times since 2012 and I have suffered a lot since I was stopped from competing at the London Olympics. I spoke about my hardship in recent times so that no other woman athlete has to go through what I had gone through. Today, I can dream of a fresh beginning.”
