• Nafissatou Thiam concludes day 1 in Talence in the lead with 4133p

Reigning Olympic champion Nafissatou Thiam of Belgium finished day one in Talence in the lead with an impressive 4133 points. Thiam opened the meet with 13.49 in the 100m hurdles and then set a new World best in the heptathlon high jump of 2.02m. She continued with a PB of 15.41m in the shot put and closed the day with 24.55 second performance in the 200m. When Thiam scored 7013 points in Gotzis in 2017, she finished day one with 4056 points.

The men's Decathlon leader after day 1 is Canadian Pierce Lepage, the 2018 Commonwealth Games silver medalist, who scored 4558 points. 

Unfortunately, Kevin Mayer, who broke the World record in decathlon last year at the same meeting, after the shot put withdrew from the competition. Later he announced he will come back tomorrow to contest in the 110m hurdles, discus and pole vault.  “I’m in the build-up for the Doha World Championships. It would be stupid to get injured at this moment of the season,” said Mayer.
