19-year-old Ruth Chebet (8:59.75) takes 3000m steeplechase gold

Kenyan born Ruth Chebet of Bahrein took the women's 3000m steeplechase Olympic gold on Monday in Rio.

The 19-year-old Chebet clocked 8:59.75 and improved her own African record by 0.16 seconds but missed the world and Olympic record by 0.96 seconds. 

Kenyan runner Hyvin Kiyeng Jepkemoi claimed silver in 9:07.12, while USA's steeple chaser Emma Coburn won bronze medal in a new national record time of 9:07.63.
