Ayana and Dibaba to attack 5000m WR

Posted by: Watch Athletics

The track and field fans awaits special treat on Saturday, July 4 as two distance running greats,  Almaz Ayana and Genzebe dibaba, will line up at Paris Areva Grand Prix (The IAAF Diamond League meet) with an aim to break the 5000m world record.

The 2013 world championships bronze medalist Ayana surprised everyone earlier this year with her superb performance of 14:14.32 in the 5000m at Shanghai diamond league meet. The 23-year-old Ethiopian's mark is history's #3 fastest time and just 3.17 seconds away from the current world record set by Tirunesh Dibaba back in 2008.  On June 14 Ayana demonstrated another world class performance by setting another impressive personal best and world leading time of 8:22.22 over 3000m in Rabat.

The latest entry into the Paris diamond league meet is Genzebe Dibaba. The world indoor record holder over 1500m, 3000m and 5000m will go out in Stade de France to better her sister's Tirunesh Dibaba's world record of 14:11.15.  At Diamond League meet in Eugene on May 30, Dibaba running most of the race alone set her outdoor personal best mark of 14:19.76. In Oslo on June 11 Diababa took a very comfortable win in 14:21.19.

If either athlete manages to break the world 5000m record, it will be the first record set at Paris Areva Grand Prix meet.
