The women's field at
ING New York City Maratahon will see a classic clash between one of the worlds two
best marathoners of Kenya Edna Kiplagat and Priscah
Jeptoo. To make it more interesting, between these two ladies the World Marathon Major title and prize of 500,000& will be decided on Sunday.
Kiplagat is the two-time World champion while Jeptoo is the 2012 Lonond Olympic silver medallist and 2013 London marathon champion.
Currently Kenya's Rita Jeptoo sits at the top of the women's world marathon standings, but she is not running the NYC race. Jeptoo won both the Boston in April and Chicago marathon just two weeks ago.
This is the scenario for the the 2012-13 World Marathon Major at NYC Marathon on Sunday.
If Priscah Jeptoowins the race she takes the WMM top prize.
If Kiplagat wins or finishes second but beats Priscah Jeptoo she takes the 500,000$ and top crown directly.
If Priscah Jeptoo finishes second and/or Kiplagat finishes third, both athletes/all three athletes will be tied with 65 points. The head-to-head tiebreaker isn't applicable, so Rita Jeptoo would win the WMM crown.
As well in the field is a two time New York City Marathon champion Yelena Prokopchuka of Latvia . There is also a group of high profile athletes like Firehiwot Dado, Bezunesh Deba, Valeria Straneo, Risa Shigetomo and a Tetyana Gamera-Shmyrko, who all have achieved podium in the major marathon events and hold marathon PR's faster than 2:24.
