Ethiopia's Kenenisa Bekele held off a late charge from Brittain's Mo Farah to win an exciting Great North Run Half Marathon on Sunday (15).
Bekele increasing the speed about one mile to go took the lead in the race and it looked like he would take an easy win. Britain's Mo Farah started his chase 400m to go, but Bekele was able to hold off Farah attack to win his first half marathon race. Bekele crossed the finish first in 1hour and 9 seconds, with Farah only one second behind.
Legendary Haile Gebraselassie took a distant third place.
"I'm disappointed but I was second to a great athlete," said Farah to BBC news.
"When Kenenisa went with a mile to go I thought the pace was ridiculous,"
"I thought I could come back. It came to the last 200m, right to the line. It was a great race and a great finish." the 2 - time Olympic Champion added.
