Jefferson-Wooden Completes Sprint Double on Final Day of USATF Championships
The 2026 Toyota USATF Outdoor Championships concluded on Sunday at Icahn Stadium in New York with another day of outstanding performances, thrilling finishes, and breakthrough victories. From Melissa Jefferson-Wooden completing the sprint double to teenage sensation Cooper Lutkenhaus capturing the men's 800m title, the final day showcased the depth of American track and field as athletes battled for national titles and season-defining performances.
Melissa Jefferson-Wooden capped a spectacular weekend by completing the sprint double, adding the women's 200-meter title to her 100-meter victory from Saturday. The American star powered away from the field to win in 21.69 seconds, finishing ahead of Cambrea Sturgis and Camryn Dickson to confirm herself as the country's dominant female sprinter this season.
The men's 200 meters provided the biggest surprise of the day. Fresh off his world-leading victory in the 100 meters, Noah Lyles appeared poised for another national title before easing up midway through the race after suffering what he later described as a cramp in his left hamstring. Garrett Kaalund seized the opportunity, storming to victory in 20.04 seconds for the biggest win of his career. Lyles later reassured reporters that the issue was cramping rather than a serious injury.
One of the performances of the championships came from teenage sensation Cooper Lutkenhaus. The 17-year-old continued his remarkable rise by claiming the men's 800-meter title in an impressive 1:43.48, displaying confidence and composure well beyond his years. The victory further established Lutkenhaus as one of the brightest young middle-distance talents in world athletics.
Nia Akins returned to the top of the podium in the women's 800 meters, winning the national crown in 1:59.25 after executing a controlled tactical race. It marked another major championship success for the American middle-distance runner.
The hurdles also produced outstanding performances. Olympic medalist Anna Cockrell captured the women's 400-meter hurdles title in 52.94 seconds, while Christopher Robinson dominated the men's race in 47.61.
The men's 110-meter hurdles featured one of the closest finishes of the weekend. Cordell Tinch and Bradley Franklin both crossed the line in 13.00 seconds, with Tinch awarded the national title by the narrowest of margins after a photo finish.
In the distance events, Grant Fisher claimed another U.S. title in the men's 5,000 meters, while Karissa Schweizer surged to victory in the women's race with a powerful finishing kick.
The field events also delivered memorable moments. Alyssa Jones secured the women's long jump title after Olympic champion Tara Davis-Woodhall appeared to produce a winning final-round jump, only for it to be ruled a foul following review. In the women's discus, Valarie Sion captured an eighth consecutive national title with a throw of 69.54 meters, while Jordan Geist continued his excellent season by winning the men's shot put with 22.32 meters.
After four days of elite competition, the 2026 Toyota USATF Outdoor Championships concluded with established stars reinforcing their status, emerging athletes announcing themselves on the national stage, and several thrilling finishes that set the tone for an exciting World Athletics Championships later this year.
