Jacobs storms to wind-assisted 9.67, third-fastest 100m ever in all conditions

Italian sprint star Lamont Marcell Jacobs produced one of the fastest 100-metre performances ever recorded in any conditions, clocking a wind-assisted 9.67 seconds (+4.1 m/s) to win at the Raiffeisen Austrian Open Eisenstadt, a World Athletics Continental Tour Silver meeting, on Wednesday evening.

After easing to a 9.84 (+2.3 m/s) in his preliminary heat, Jacobs took full advantage of a strong tailwind in the final, defeating Romell Glave, who finished second in 9.76, while South Africa's world 400m record-holder Wayde van Niekerk placed third in 9.83.

Although the performance will not be eligible for record purposes because the wind exceeded the legal limit of 2.0 m/s, Jacobs' 9.67 ranks as the third-fastest men's 100m ever run in all conditions, behind only Usain Bolt's 9.58 world record from Berlin in 2009 and his 9.63 Olympic record from London 2012.

"I'm very happy because I'm improving with every race. Of course, it was very windy here, but only Bolt in history has managed to beat this time, and I'm really happy to have achieved such a time," Jacobs said after the race.

The result is another encouraging sign for the Olympic champion, who has now broken the 10-second barrier four times this season after an injury-disrupted 2025 campaign. Jacobs will now turn his attention to the European Athletics Championships in Birmingham in August, where he will chase a third consecutive continental 100m title.

Elsewhere, Austria's Magdalena Lindner delighted the home crowd by winning the women's 100m in a wind-assisted 11.06 (+3.7 m/s), narrowly edging Christania Williams, who clocked 11.08. Ukraine's Lyudmyla Olyanovska also set a world best of 6:10.09 in the rarely contested one-mile race walk.
