Rotterdam Marathon 2026: Abdi Returns as Elite Field Targets Fast Times on Historic Course

Posted by: Watch Athletics

NN Marathon Rotterdam 2026 returns on Sunday, April 12, with a world-class elite field assembled for what promises to be another fast and highly competitive edition on one of Europe’s quickest marathon courses.

The 45th edition is shaping up as a record-chasing spectacle, with both the men’s and women’s races featuring deep international lineups capable of producing standout performances on the famously flat Rotterdam streets.

Men’s Race: Abdi Leads Sub-2:03 Ambitions

The men’s field is headlined by Belgian star Bashir Abdi, who returns to Rotterdam after injury with unfinished business. The Olympic medalist and course record holder (2:03:36) is aiming to reclaim top form and challenge his own mark, with an eye on the European record.

He will face a formidable lineup of proven performers:

  • Birhanu Legese – PB 2:02:48
  • Haymanot Alew – PB 2:03:31
  • Erick Sang – PB 2:04:30
  • Kenneth Kipkemoi – PB 2:04:52

With multiple athletes capable of running well under 2:04, the race is expected to develop at an aggressive pace, potentially threatening the 2:03 barrier if conditions align.

Women’s Race: Defending Champion Cherono Faces Deep Field

The women’s race is equally competitive, led by defending champion Jackline Cherono, who returns after her 2025 victory with a personal best of 2:21:14.

She will be challenged by a strong group of East African contenders:

  • Mekides Shimeles – PB 2:19:56
  • Shitaye Eshete – PB 2:20:32
  • Meskerem Assefa – PB 2:20:36
  • Aminet Ahmed – PB 2:21:24

With several athletes clustered in the 2:19–2:21 range, the women’s race could come down to a tactical battle in the closing stages—or produce a breakthrough performance if pacing proves consistent.

Course Update and Event Highlights

The 2026 edition will feature a modified finish on the iconic Coolsingel, moved slightly earlier due to ongoing construction at Hofplein. Despite the adjustment, the course remains one of the fastest in the world.

Additional highlights include:

  • The race is completely sold out, with 17,000 participants selected through a lottery system
  • The event will once again host the Dutch Marathon Championships, adding a national title race within the elite competition

With a stacked international field and a course built for speed, the 2026 Rotterdam Marathon is poised to deliver fast times, tactical racing, and potentially record-breaking performances.

All eyes will be on whether Bashir Abdi can reclaim dominance on home European roads—and whether the women’s field can push toward the sub-2:20 barrier in one of the spring’s premier marathon showdowns.
