Gressier clocks 12:51 European record, Ngetich runs 28:58 at Lille

France’s Jimmy Gressier produced one of the standout performances of the season at the Urban Trail de Lille on Saturday (April 4), breaking his own European 5km record with a blistering 12:51—just two seconds shy of the world record.
Gressier improved by six seconds on the mark he set on the same course last year, when he became the first European to break 13 minutes. The Frenchman now moves to joint third on the world all-time list, behind only Berihu Aregawi (12:49) and Yomif Kejelcha (12:50).
The race unfolded into a thrilling battle over the closing stages, with Ethiopia’s Addisu Yihune finishing second in 12:54 to move to fifth all-time, while France’s Yann Schrub clocked 12:56 to also dip under the previous European record in a historic sub-13 sweep.
In the women’s 10km, Kenya’s Agnes Ngetich delivered another world-class run, winning in 28:58—the third-fastest performance in history. The world cross-country champion passed halfway in around 14:14 before slightly fading but still secured a dominant victory. Ethiopia’s Chaltu Dida (30:02) and Hirut Meshesha (30:05) completed the podium, while Italy’s Nadia Battocletti narrowly missed the European record with 30:08.
The women’s 5km produced another sensational result as 17-year-old Ethiopian Marta Alemayo ran a world U20 best of 14:15 to win, placing her third on the all-time list. Fellow Ethiopians Hawi Abera (14:22) and Yenenesh Shimket (14:24) followed in a sweep that also pushed both into the all-time top 10.
Ethiopia’s Khairi Bejiga capped the day by winning the men’s 10km in 26:51, equalling his personal best, with Kenya’s Laban Kiptoo Kosgei close behind in 26:59 as both dipped under 27 minutes in a high-quality race.
