Josh Hoey continued his sensational indoor season by breaking the world indoor record for 600 metres, clocking a breathtaking 1:12.84 at the BU Sharon Colyear-Danville Season Opener in Boston on Saturday (December 6).

The 26-year-old American erased the previous world indoor best of 1:13.77, set by Olympic champion Donavan Brazier in 2019, delivering one of the fastest 600m performances ever recorded under any conditions. Hoey’s time also came within just three hundredths of a second of Johnny Gray’s long-standing outdoor world best of 1:12.81, achieved in 1986.

Hoey went out aggressively, reaching 400m in approximately 47 seconds, before powering home over the final lap to complete one of the most audacious front-running performances of the indoor season. The race was paced by his older brother Jonah Hoey, adding a personal touch to a record-breaking night that underlined Hoey’s dominance at non-championship distances.

The performance further reinforces Hoey’s status as the world’s premier indoor middle-distance runner in 2025. Earlier this season, the adidas-sponsored athlete set an American indoor record in the 1000m (2:14.48) and lowered the national indoor 800m record to 1:43.90 at the Millrose Games. He also crowned his winter campaign by winning gold in the 800m at the World Athletics Indoor Championships, confirming his ability to translate raw speed into championship success.

A former US high school phenom from Pennsylvania, Hoey burst onto the national scene as a teenager before navigating injuries and rebuilding phases early in his professional career. His recent resurgence has been built on exceptional speed endurance, with his 600m mark now ranking among the fastest single-lap-plus efforts in history.

With a season-best profile that includes elite marks from 600m to 1000m and consistent sub-1:44 indoor 800m performances, Hoey is increasingly being discussed as a serious contender for 1:42-low or faster outdoors. Friday’s run in Boston suggests that his ceiling may be even higher.
