Hassan and Kiros Shatter Records at 2025 Sydney Marathon as Kipchoge Finishes Ninth
The 2025 TCS Sydney Marathon delivered a historic spectacle on Sunday, August 31, as Ethiopia’s Hailemaryam Kiros and the Netherlands’ Sifan Hassan stormed to emphatic victories, both setting course records and rewriting Australian marathon history.
Kiros claimed the men’s title in 2:06:06, the fastest marathon ever run on Australian soil, edging compatriot Addisu Gobena (2:06:16) in a thrilling duel over the closing kilometers. Tebello Ramakongoana of Lesotho completed the podium in 2:06:47, marking the deepest men’s field the Sydney race has ever seen.
In the women’s race, Olympic champion Sifan Hassan once again proved her extraordinary range, dominating in 2:18:22 to become the first woman to dip under 2:20 in Australia. Former world record holder Brigid Kosgei battled valiantly for second in 2:18:56, while Ethiopia’s Workenesh Edesa secured third in 2:22:15. Hassan’s victory underscored her remarkable ability to transition seamlessly from track to road, cementing her status as one of the most versatile runners in history.
The spotlight also shone on marathon legend Eliud Kipchoge, who lined up in Sydney for his 23rd career marathon at age 40. While unable to keep pace with the Ethiopian charge in the final stages, the Kenyan icon battled to a ninth-place finish in 2:08:31. Though no longer the invincible force of earlier years, Kipchoge’s presence and sportsmanship drew admiration from fans and fellow athletes alike.
With both races producing national and continental records, the 2025 edition firmly established Sydney as a rising powerhouse on the global marathon calendar, combining world-class performances with vibrant crowd support along its scenic course.
