Brigid Kosgei Joins Strong Elite Field at Haspa Marathon Hamburg

Posted by: Watch Athletics

Former world record holder Brigid Kosgei has been added to a stacked elite field for the Haspa Marathon Hamburg. The Kenyan famously broke Paula Radcliffe’s long-standing world record with a time of 2:14:04 at the 2019 Chicago Marathon. With her addition, three women with personal bests under 2:19:00 are now confirmed for the race.

In the men’s field, fellow Kenyan Amos Kipruto leads with a PB of 2:03:13. He’s one of five athletes entered who have run under 2:05:00. The 39th edition of the Haspa Marathon Hamburg takes place on 27 April.

“With regard to the fastest men and women on the start list, this is the best field ever assembled in the history of the Haspa Marathon Hamburg. We are looking forward to some thrilling and fast racing,” said race director Frank Thaleiser.

Kosgei, the Olympic silver medallist from Tokyo 2021, is the fastest marathon runner ever entered in a race on German-speaking soil. Her 2:14:04 still ranks as the fourth fastest time in history. While the 31-year-old hasn’t matched that mark in recent years, she has consistently run sub-2:20:00 every year since. She won the London Marathon in 2019 and 2020, and claimed victory in Tokyo in 2022. Hamburg will be her first marathon since finishing fifth in London a year ago in 2:19:02.

She’ll face tough competition from Ethiopia, with Roza Dereje (2:18:30) and Workenesh Edesa (2:18:51) leading the charge.

The men’s race promises fireworks, too. Kipruto (2:03:13), Ethiopia’s Guye Adola (2:03:46), and Kinde Atanaw (2:03:51) have all gone under 2:04:00. Kenyans Bethwel Chumba (2:04:37) and Philemon Kiplimo (2:04:56) round out the group of sub-2:05 runners.

Germany’s Richard Ringer, the 2022 European Champion, will test himself against this elite field. He recently improved his PB to 2:05:46 in Valencia last December.
