The TCS London Marathon, a World Athletics Platinum Label road race, is set to witness an electrifying contest as all four reigning Olympic and Paralympic marathon champions, including the phenomenal Sifan Hassan and Ethiopia's Tamirat Tola, prepare to compete on Sunday, 27 April 2025.
Dutch superstar Sifan Hassan, who achieved an unparalleled feat by winning Olympic gold over 5,000m, 10,000m, and the marathon, is returning to the scene of her remarkable marathon debut. Hassan's history-making performance at Paris 2024 added to her already stellar reputation, making her return to London highly anticipated. Reflecting on her journey, Hassan shared, "London is where I learned to be patient, to trust myself, and to keep pushing even when it feels impossible. It is a place where I grew, not just as an athlete, but as a person."
Hassan's first London Marathon appearance in 2023 was a showcase of determination; she overcame a significant gap to claim victory in a dramatic finish. This victory was a precursor to her marathon gold at the Paris Olympics, where she displayed similar resilience and a formidable sprint finish to clinch the title.
Joining her in London is Tamirat Tola, the men's Olympic marathon champion, who also has a world title under his belt. Tola, who set a new Games record in Paris, expressed his ambitions for London, stating, "Winning the Paris Olympic Marathon was the greatest moment of my running career, but I don’t want it to be my last great moment." Tola, known for his consistency and strength, aims to capture his first victory in London, enhancing his already impressive marathon credentials that include victories in New York and Amsterdam.
The 2025 London Marathon will also feature Paralympic champions Catherine Debrunner and Marcel Hug, making the event a gathering of some of the finest talents in long-distance running.
As these athletes line up for the 2025 London Marathon, they not only bring their remarkable athletic prowess but also a deep connection to the city that has been the backdrop to some of their most memorable races. This blend of personal achievement and competitive spirit ensures that the upcoming London Marathon will be an event filled with inspiring performances and unforgettable moments.
