Abdi Nageeye wins the New York City Marathon

Abdi Nageeye claimed victory at New York City Marathon in 2:07:39. The Dutch athlete surged ahead of 2022 New York winner Evans Chebet in the final 400 meters to secure the win.

Chebet crossed the finish line just six seconds behind, with a time of 2:07:45. Kenya’s Albert Korir, the 2021 New York winner, completed the podium in third with 2:08:00, while Tamirat Tola, last year’s New York champion and Olympic gold medalist, finished fourth in 2:08:12.

Nageeye, Chebet, Korir, and Tola were part of a large leading pack that passed the 10 km mark in 31:27 and the 15 km mark in 46:54. Tola took the lead as the pack reached the halfway point in 1:05:33, with twelve athletes just three seconds behind him.

By 25 km, fourteen athletes remained in the leading group. Only Chebet, Tola, Nageeye, Geoffrey Kamworor, and Wesley Korir were still in contention at 30 km. Korir was dropped from the lead group at 32 km, and as Tola began to fall back, Kamworor, Chebet, and Nageeye pushed the pace.

Nageeye stuck closely with Chebet as the two pulled away from Kamworor at 37 km.

Running neck-and-neck, Nageeye and Chebet reached the 40 km mark in 2:01:10. Kamworor, overtaken by both Tola and Korir, faded to fifth place.

In the final stretch through Central Park, Nageeye launched his decisive move, pulling away from Chebet to claim his first win in New York. Chebet, unable to respond, settled for second place.

This race marked Nageeye’s first marathon since the Olympic Games in Paris, where he was unable to finish.

A seasoned competitor, Nageeye won the Olympic silver medal in 2021 and placed third in New York in 2022.

“At the finish, I was like, ‘Am I dreaming or not? I won New York!’ I was so focused, and there was hard work behind this. The last mile was really tough, and I pushed myself to the limit. This victory proves my training has been good. I’m so happy,” said Abdi Nageeye.
