Kipchumba and Ngugi-Cooper Triumph at Great North Run

At this year’s Great North Run, the competition was fierce, showcasing remarkable talent from around the globe. In the men's race, Kenyan runner Abel Kipchumba emerged victorious, completing the half marathon in an impressive time of 59 minutes and 52 seconds. Kipchumba's performance underscored his prowess on the international running stage, as he maintained a strong lead against formidable competitors.
British runner Marc Scott, fresh off his victory at the UK Athletics 5K Road Running Championship, finished a commendable second with a time of 1:01:11, improving on his previous performance in 2021. Norway’s Sondre Noen also made a strong showing, securing third place and rounding out a competitive field.
The women’s race was equally thrilling, with Kenya's Mary Ngugi-Cooper breaking away in the final stages to win in 1:07:40. Ngugi-Cooper’s victory was hard-fought in a closely contested race that saw a lead group of six runners break away early on. The pack included Great Britain's Eilish McColgan, who, after returning from injury to compete in the Paris Olympics, finished in fifth place with an impressive sprint finish. Ethiopian runners Senbere Teferi and Alemu Megertu finished second and third, respectively, showcasing their endurance and tactical racing skills in a tight finish.
This year’s Great North Run highlighted the incredible depth of talent in long-distance running, with both the men’s and women’s races providing drama and showcasing the spirit of international competition.
