Chebet Claims Women's 5000m Olympic Gold in Paris

Beatrice Chebet of Kenya secured the Olympic gold medal in Paris in the women's 5000 meters with a time of 14:28.56, further embellishing her already impressive resume that includes a silver at Eugene 2022 and a bronze at Budapest 2023 in the same event. Chebet also holds the distinction of being the first woman to break the 29-minute barrier in the 10000 meters, setting a world record of 28:54.14 at the Prefontaine Classic in Eugene.

Her time of 14:28.56 stands as the second-fastest in Olympic history, trailing only Vivian Cheruiyot's 14:26.17 from Rio, with Faith Kipyegon's 14:29.60 as the third fastest.

Faith Kipyegon, the world champion, claimed the silver medal with a time of 14:29.60. Initially disqualified due to an obstruction, Kipyegon was later reinstated.

Sifan Hassan of the Netherlands, who won dual golds in the 5000m and 10000m at Tokyo 2021, added a bronze to her collection with a time of 14:30.61.

Italy's Nadia Battocletti set a new national record of 14:31.64, finishing fourth in her second Olympic final.

The race dynamics changed dramatically at the 3000-meter mark, led by Ejgayehu Taye and Gudaf Tsegay, intensifying the pace with two and a half laps remaining. The lead pack was reduced to eight contenders, including double Olympic champion Sifan Hassan, Beatrice Chebet, Faith Kipyegon, and Margaret Kipkemboi Chelimo, along with Taye, Tsegay, and Battocletti.

The Kenyans took charge at the bell, with Kipyegon and Chebet breaking away from Hassan in the final 200 meters. In a thrilling finish, Chebet surged past Kipyegon in the last 40 meters to clinch the victory.
