The excitement typically reserved for the Olympics will arrive early in the 2024 track season, as the Prefontaine Classic, a Diamond League event, unveils its lineup for the Bowerman Mile on May 25. This year's edition features a trio of standout athletes: Josh Kerr, Jakob Ingebrigtsen, and Yared Nuguse.
This event marks a thrilling competition among the current world champion, the Olympic champion, and the holder of the American record. The Bowerman Mile at the Eugene-held Prefontaine Classic, the season's fifth Wanda Diamond League meeting, promises an intense showdown among Kerr, Ingebrigtsen, and Nuguse.
At the World Athletics Championships last August, Britain's Kerr narrowly defeated Norway's Ingebrigtsen, securing his first world title with a time of 3:29.38. Kerr, aged 26, continued his winning streak by capturing the world indoor 3000m championship in Glasgow, besting the American Nuguse, who took silver with a time of 7:43.59.
Kerr excitedly announced his participation in the #preclassic on Instagram, signaling a return to his strongest event after experimenting with various distances. The Budapest World Championships was the last occasion these competitors met, with Nuguse placing fifth, just behind Kerr and Ingebrigtsen.
Though Kerr and Ingebrigtsen have yet to compete against each other in the mile, the previous year's Bowerman Mile saw Ingebrigtsen and Nuguse finish first and second, respectively, setting impressive records. Ingebrigtsen's win, his seventh appearance at the Prefontaine Classic, not only broke the European record with a time of 3:43.73 but also secured him the Diamond League trophy, with Nuguse setting a North American record with his close second-place finish.
