Cuban and Lithuanian High Jumpers Triumph at Udine Indoor Tour Challenger

At the Udin Jump Development (World Indoor Tour Challenger meeting) held at the Pala Ovidio Bernes in Udine on Tuesday, February 6, high jumpers Luis Enrique Zayas from Cuba and Airine Palsyte from Lithuania emerged victorious in their respective categories. Zayas, marking his second consecutive win at this event, successfully cleared the height of 2.26 meters on his first attempt but was unable to surpass 2.30 meters in two subsequent tries. His performance in Udine follows a fourth-place finish at the World Championships in Budapest, where he achieved a height of 2.33 meters in August. Roberto Vilches of Mexico secured the second position with a jump of 2.21 meters, outperforming Andiy Protsenko from Ukraine, a world bronze medalist, who cleared 2.18 meters.

In the women's competition, Airine Palsyte, the 2017 European indoor champion from Belgrade, clinched the title with a third-attempt jump of 1.88 meters, edging out Buse Savaskan of Turkey who jumped 1.85 meters. The competition was tight, with Aurora Vicini, the Italian indoor under 20 champion, also clearing 1.85 meters to take third place on countback, ahead of Michaela Hruba from the Czech Republic and Idea Pieroni from Italy.

The event also paid homage to the late Italian high jumper Alessandro Talotti, who passed away in May 2021, and featured special guests including Javier Sotomayor, Antonietta Di Martino, and Giuseppe Gibilisco, celebrating the legacy and development of high jumping.
