Posted by: Watch Athletics

In the Shanghai Marathon held on November 26, favorable weather conditions played a key role in Philimon Kiptoo Kipchumba from Kenya setting a new course record. Clocking a time of 2:05:35, he broke the previous record of 2:07:14, held since 2015 by fellow Kenyan Paul Lonyangata. This achievement marks the fastest men's marathon time in China.

The event saw 38,000 participants, including international and local runners, starting their journey from the Bund. Kipchumba, experiencing Shanghai for the first time, praised the course and the ideal weather, which he credited for his record-setting performance. His victory earned him a US$55,000 prize, plus an additional US$20,000 for the new record.

Tanzanian runner Alphonce Felix Simbu finished closely behind Kipchumba with a time of 2:05:39, followed by another Kenyan, Solomon Kirwa Yego, who completed the marathon in 2:05:42.

The first Chinese runner to cross the finish line was Wu Xiangdong, with a time of 2:11:53, placing him ninth overall. He was closely followed by Jia E'renjia, the 2020 Shanghai Marathon winner, who finished tenth with a time of 2:11:58.

In the women's category, the title was claimed by Siranesh Yirga Dagne from Ethiopia, completing the race in 2:21:28. She was trailed by Kenyan Selly Chepyego Kaptich (2:21:55) and Bahraini Eunice Chebichii Chumba (2:22:20).
