Bahrain's Kalkidan Gezahegne breaks women's 10km World record with 29:38

Bahrain's Kalkidan Gezahegne won the Giants Geneva 10km road race in 29 minutes 38 seconds and broke the World record on Sunday.

The Ethiopian-born Gezahegne, shaved five seconds from the previous mark of 29:43 set by Kenya's Joyciline Jepkosgei back in 2017.

 The 30-year-old Gezahegne won 10,000m silver medal at the Tokyo Olympics behind Sifan Hassan.

Agnes Tirop of Kenya, who just two weeks ago set a new record for women-only 10km race with a time of 30.01, took second place in 30:20 with her compatriot Celliphine Chespol in third in 30:28.

In the men's race Kenya's half marathon world record holder Kibiwott Kandie claimed the victory in 26:51. Felix Kipkoech took second in 26:57 while Boniface Kibiwott was third with 27:13.
