1- Rulon Gardner (2000)

Nobody expected a great success from Rulon Gardner at the Summer Olympics in Sydney. However, he shocked the wrestling world in 2000 when he pulled off one of the biggest upsets in Olympics history.

His rival was the mighty Aleksandr Karelin whose previous record suggested almost no hope for Gardner. The Russian had claimed three consecutive gold medals at 1988, 1992, and 1996 Olympic Games and had not lost a competition in 15 years.   However, Karelin was bested by the man hailing from a small town in Wyoming. Gardner bagged his first Gold Medal and hence won the hearts of many American fans. The amazing wrestler later won a bronze medal at the 2004 Olympic Games.

2- Kerri Strug (1996)

Kerri Strug’s popularity tremendously increased after her performance at the 1996 Summer Olympics. The United States was facing Russia and Romania, and everything came down to the performance of the Tucson born gymnast on the vault.

The United States team received a big blow when Strug got a serious ankle injury on her first vault attempt. To claim the gold, she had to go one more time. Showing great fortitude and will, she pulled off her second attempt, and thus the United States won their first-ever gold in the team gymnastics competition.

3- Michael Phelps (2008)

Michael Phelps is regarded as one of the best athletes ever in the world. His Olympics records look unlikely to be matched by anyone else. With a total of 28 medals, the American has the distinction of being the most successful Olympian of all time. Some of his most memorable performances came at the 2008 Beijing Games when he garnered a record eight gold medals and broke Mark Spitz’s record. His eighth medal came in the most dramatic fashion as his brilliance as well as some luck helped him set the record.
