The 2020 Chicago Marathon has been canceled because of coronavirus fears, the event organizers said on Monday (13).

"For 42 years, runners, volunteers, and spectators have shown up on the streets of Chicago to turn an individual sport into a collective experience. While we’d hoped to continue the tradition this October, the health and safety of everyone participating is our highest priority." The Chicago marathon organizers wrote on Twitter.

"Registered participants for the 2020 Chicago Marathon and International Chicago 5K will have the option to receive a refund for their entry or to defer their place and entry fee to a future race (2021, 2022 or 2023). An update with additional information will be provided soon."

This year's New York and Boston marathons have been also canceled because of coronavirus pandemic, meaning that there will not be any major marathon this year in the United States.

In Europe, the Paris marathon organizers are still hoping to host the event in November while the London event organizes are yet to decide whether to have the marathon at all this year.
