With 500m left in the race Kiplimo, the World Cross Country Championships silver medalist, was in a comfortable lead and it seemed he would become the first Ugandan to win the historic road race. But Kandie with a late kick in the final 30m meters overtook the pre-race favorite Jacob Kiplimo.
Both men clocked 42:59 breaking the previous course record of 43:15 set by legendary Kenyan Paul Tergat back in 1995.
Brigid Kosgei of Kenya, the marathon World record holder, won the women’s 15km race by more than a minute. Kosgei stopped the clock at 48:54 just 20 seconds shy of the course record.
