The 26-year-old Walsh in the opening round threw huge 22.13 to take the lead. The 2017 World outdoor champion from last year, Walsh, then failed in the two following rounds before unleashing a monster throw of 22.31m to secure the gold and break the 31-year-old World indoor championships record.
The previous World indoor championships record belonged to German thrower Ulf Timmermann, who in the first IAAF World indoor championships in Indianapolis threw 22.24m and won the gold.
