Lysenko and Lasitskene Take World Indoor High Jump Titles

Russian high jumpers Danil Lysenko and Mariya Lasitskene claimed gold medals in the men's and women's high jump contests during the opening night at 2018 IAAF World Indoor Championships in Birmingham on Thursday 1 March.

Danil Lysenlo took a revenge on Mutaz Essa Barshim from last year's World outdoor championships by winning his first global tile.

Lysenko cleared 2.36m on his third attempt to beat defending World indoor and outdoor champion Mutaz Essa Barshim who cleared 2.33 but on all three attempts at 2.36 to take silver. Meanwhile a surprise bronze medal took Mateusz Przybylko of Germany with 2.29m.

In the women's high jump contest Mariya Lasitskene dominated the event by clearing 2.01m. The defending champion Vashti Cunningham  cleared of the United States cleared 1.93m and took silver on a count-back as Italy's Alessia Trost concluded the podium (1.93m).

The 24-year-old Lasistkene became the 4-time World champion by winning two titles indoors in 2014 and 1018 and outdoors in 2015 and 2017.

Both Russian athletes are competing under neutral flag as Russian Athletics federation remains banned from international completion for serious doping rule violations.
