18/Y/O Barega Takes Down World Champ Edris in 3000m in Lievin

The 18-year-old World Youth Champion,Selemon Barega,  defeated World Senior champion Muktar Edris in the 3000m race at the International Meeting in Metz, France on Tuesday 13 February.

The World Youth Champion from Ethiopia  Barega, pushed away from the leading pack 400m to go and broke the tape in a new World leading time of 7:36.64 4 seconds ahead of defending World 5000m champion Muktar Edris (7:40.69). The third place with 7:41.97 took Morocco's  Soufiane el Bakkali. Watch race highlights here.

Another World lead was set in the men's 1500m race by 2014 World indoor champ, Ayanleh Souleman of Djibouti, who clocked 3:35.39. Abdelaati Iguider of Morocco came in second with 2nd fastest time in 2018 of 3:37.79. Meanwhile Norway's 17-year-old Jacob Ingebrigsten broke the European U20 indoor record with 3:40.31 to take 7th place. 

World and Olympic champion Ekaterini Stefanidi extended her unbeaten streak to 17 competitions by winning women's pole vault with her season's best of 5.83m. 

Poland's Adam Kszczot, the 2-time World silver medalist outdoors,  picked up his third elite international win by claiming the 800m race in 1:47.12.

Ethiopia's Habitam Alemu broke the 2 minute barrier to win the women's 800m in 1:59.69 ahead of Kenya's Margaret Wambui (2:00.48).

Brazil's Rosangela Santos prevailed in the women's 60m dash in 7.20.

Ludovic Payen of France took the men's 60m in 7.66 seconds.
