Despite an unsuccessful 79.16m attempt in the opening round, the 7th place finisher at last year's world championships, Johannes Vetter, shocked his rivals with an impressive toss of 88.23m for the win. Anti Ruuskanen, the former world championships medalist, took second with a new season's best of 86.90m, while Beijing world championships silver medalist and 2016 world season leader Thomas Rohler of Germany threw 86.30m for third.
Former world champion Tero Pitkamaki of Finland took fourth place with a season's best mark of 85.35m.
