• Meseret Defar wins Carlsbad 5000; Lagat sets new world masters record; Race Videos Included

The 2-time Olympic champion Meseret Defar prevailed at the Carlsbad 5000, while Bernard Lagat set a new World Masters 5K record on Sunday, April 2.

 

Defar, who two weeks ago took 3000m silver at the Word Indoor championships in Portland, with a dominant performance in the last stages took the Carlsbad 5000 title with a time of 15:02. Kenya's Caroline Kipkirui crossed the line second in 15:13, while Netherlands Susan Kuijken was third in 15:28.

“The race was good. The first kilometer was a little bit fast,

 “I didn’t run a very fast time, but the race was good for me.

 “It’s my favorite place. The fans are amazing. They cheer me on. I am so happy to be here.” Defar told Competitor.

In the men's 5km race the 41-year-old Bernard Lagat finished in 4th in 13:38 braking his own World' Masters record he set last year.  


“I’m always happy to come here in Carlsbad and compete,

 “Thank you to the fans, too.”  Lagat said after the race.

The race winner was Uganda's  Joshua Cheptegei, who broke the tape with a time of 13:24. Kenya's Wilson Too took second place in  13:29, while Debeli Gezmu of Ethiopia beat Bernard Lagat on the line to take third in 13:38.
