Caster Semenya clocks 2:00.23 in her first 800m of the season and qualifies for Rio Olympics

Former world 800m champion Caster Semeyna opened her season in style as she slocked 2:00.23 in 800m to win Athletics South Africa Night Series 2 meeting in Greenpoint, SA on Tuesday night.

The 2009 world 800m champion Semenya posted her fastest time  in three years of 2:00:23 as she continues to prepare for Rio 2016 Olympics. The 25-year-old South African runner, who failed to qualify for last year's World Outdoor Championships, met the Rio Olympics qualifying standard.

Elroy Gelant won the men's 5000m with a time of 13:20.70 and hit the Rio Olympics qualifying standard. 

Women's 100m winner Alyssa Conley posted 11.36, while Henricho Bruintjies won the men's 100m final in 10.26. Men's 100m video, Women's 100m video. 

Other notable result produced the 2011 World Championships silver medalist and South African 400m hurdles record holder (47.66) Lj Van Zyl, who clocked 49.74 seconds over the 400m hurdles. Video 

Vicotr Hogan threw 64.01m to win the men's discus throw contest. 

Men's 1500m was won by Dumisang Hlaselo in 3:38:39. Video here.
