Kenya's John Mwangangi running 2:06.13 broke the previous Valencia marathon record by almost one minute. He also bettered his personal best mark by one second and recorded the fastest marathon ever seen on Spanish soil. The old Valencia marathon course record belonged to Kenyan Felix Kipchichir who ran 2:07:08 back in 2013.
Namibia’s Beata Naigambo won the women's marathon in a new course record time of 2.26.58. Naigambo became the first back-to-back winner in Valencia since local runner Elisenda Pucurull won three consecutive titles in 1989, 1990 and in 1991.
Kenya's Nancy Kiprop crossed the line second in 2:27:34, while Morocco's Malika Asahssah concluded the podium in 2:28:02.
