Another great Diamond League meet was held on Sunday, May 18, where several world leading marks and big PR's were set in China's one of the greatest cities Shanghai. Check out top highlights from Sunday's meeting.
1. The Biggest Surprise - Wenjun Xie (CHN) Men's 110m hurdles
Several thousands Chinese track and field fans had to wait to unleash the excitement until the very end of the Shanghai Diamond league meeting, when the local 110m hurdler Wenjun Xie took a surprise victory with a new PB of 13.24sec. The Chinese hurdler, Xie, defeated on his way World Championship medalists as David Oliver, Sergey Subenkov, Martiont-Lagarde and former world record holder Robles of Cuba. VIDEO HERE>>
2. The Big Throw - Ihab Abdelrahman (EGY) Javelin Men
It was the day of Egyptian javelin thrower, Ihab Abdelrahman, who in the first round froze his opponents with his massive throw of 89.21m setting a new African record. The closest opponent and the second place winner Kim Amb of Sweden was more than five meters short of Abdelrahman mark. The giant Egyptian,Abdelrahman, added five meters and 49 centemeters to his previous personal best making him #13 all time in the history. VIDEO HERE>>
3. The Unstoppable - Emma Coburn (USA) 3000m steeple
Some say go with a pacemaker some say no. American steepler, Emma Couburn, knocked down all the World and Olympic games medllists as she was the only one in the race to follow the rabbit. After the pacemaker dropped off after 1 km mark, Coburn had an impressive gap of about 60m from the chasing pack. From there the young American cruised to her first Diamond League victory setting a new personal best and world leading mark of 9:19.80. VIDEO HERE>>
4. The Tactician - Jenny Simpson (USA) Women's 1500m
Who knows its own pace as good as the two time world championship medalist ,Jenny Simpson, when she decided to stay back as the race went out pretty hot. The American mid-distance star stayed patiently in 9th for the first two laps having about 10m gap between the leaders. The race started to slow down itself after the 1000m mark as Simpson kept on her pace and found herself in the lead some 250m to go. Only the world champion Aregawi was able to push away from Simpson, but Simspon's perfect race judgment resulted in her second best all time mark of 4:00:42.
5. The Worst Early Celebration - Taoufik Makhloufi (ALG) 800m Men
The men's 800m race in Shaghai will stay in the memory of the Olympic 1500m champion, Taoufik Makhloufi, when he stretched out his hands to celebrate the victory several meters before the line, while from Kenya's teenager Robert Biwott passed him from the right side to win the race. VIDEO HERE>>
6. The Double- Blessing Okabare - Women's Long Jump and 200m
It was the first time when a man or woman win two individual events at Diamond League meet when Nigeria's Blessing Okakbare did it on Sunday. She first won the long jump with an impressive 6.86m leap and an hour later she grabbed a victory in the 200m 22.36 seconds. Both marks were new personal best for the Nigerian athlete.
