Abakumova Improves World Lead to 70.53m

The 2012 Olympic Champion in Javelin Mariya Abakumova of Russia with an impressive throw of 70.53m took victory at the ISTAF World Challenge meeting in Berlin on Sunday, September 1.

In the opening round, Abakumova took the lead with a brilliant throw of 68.82, and later in the fourth she cemented her lead at 70.53m mark. The Russian is the only javelin thrower this season to throw farther than 70m.

 The final two positions on the podium took German throwers with Linda Stahl in second with 65.35m and with the Moscow world championships gold medallist Christina Obergfoll in 3rd with 63.30m.
