• Ryoko Kizaki Wins Nagoya Women’s Marathon and Qualifies for Moscow!
Ryoko Kizaki of Japan won the Nagoya Women’s Marathon Sunday, February 10 – an IAAF Gold Label Road Race. Just 2km left in the race, Nagoya took the lead from 19- year old Ethipian Berhane Dibaba an never looked back. Her winning time of 2:23:34 is the new personal best the second-fastest time in the world this year,and a guaranteed spot in the Japan's Marathon team that will compete in August at the World Championships in Moscow, Russia.
The young Ethiopian, Berhane Dibaba finished 17 seconds behind Kizaki in second. The third place with a time of 2:24:05 took Japans Mizuki Noguchi and well known and experienced marathoner Jelena Prokopchuka of Latvia finished in a distante fourth (2:25.46).
“I was really nervous before the race to the point that I was not able to sleep at all last night. However, I was able to run quite relaxed today,” said Kizaki, the Asian marathon recor holder. “I fell behind the bit when Dibaba surged (at 30km), but that was because I try to keep the same pace. But soon I realized I must catch up to the leaders.”
