• Kibet and Straneo Headline Turin Marathon
Italian Marathon record holder Valeria Straneo and Dutchwoman Hilda Kibet will leade the women’s race at the 26th edition of the Turin Marathon Gran Premio La Stampa, this Sunday, November 18.
Both athletes were planning to compete at the ING New York City Marathon on November 28, but they had to change their copetition plans, due to the destructive damage caused by the Hurricane Sandy that forced organizers to cancel the event.
This season Valeria Straneo bettered twice her personal best times. First she ran a very fast 1:07:46 PR at the Roma-Ostia Half Marathon. And in April she broke Italian Marathon record in Rotterdam with a time of 2:23:44. At the London Olympics she finished 8th. clocking 2:25:28.
Hilda Kibet holds a personal best time of 2:24:27 in marathon that she ran in Rotterdam in 2011. In addition, she won the European Cross Country title in 2008.
Straneo and Kibet will be challenged by Ethiopian Derbe Gordana Gobesa who holds a personal best time of 2:28:52 and a former Italian 3000m Steeplechase record holder Emma Quaglia who has ran 2:31:15 in April in Milan and Kenyan Iness Chenonge who will make her debut in the marathon.
The men’s race will be led by Daniel Rono PB 2:06:58 set in Rotterdam in 2008, and Nicholas Kipruto Koech who holds a personal best mark of 2:07:23 set in Prague 2010. Rono and Kipruto will face Jackson Kiprono Kirwa PB 2:10:35 and Ukraine’s Oleksiy Sitkovskyy PB 2:09:26, who also finsihed 12th at the London Olympic Games. In fact Sitkovsky finished second in Turin marathon four years ago.
Turin marathon is IAAF Gold Label Road Race.
